CODE OF ETHICS TRAINING
|
Maryland Code of Ethics as required by the MD Real
Estate Commission
and
NAR REALTOR® Code of Ethics requirements
Confused?!? Read our FAQs Below
Q. What are the specific Maryland Code of Ethics
requirements?
A. Every two (2) years, all Maryland licensees are
required to complete one, three (3) hour Maryland Code of Ethics
Course that includes the practices of flipping and predatory
lending.
Q. I've heard there is a different Code of Ethics training
requirement for REALTORS®. Is that true?
A. Maryland real estate agents who are also
REALTORS® must fulfill the requirements of the Real Estate
Commission as described above plus every four (4) years the
National Association of REALTORS® requires that REALTORS®
complete one, 2.5 hour REALTOR® Code of Ethics
course. The current four-year cycle began January 1,
2005 and ends December 31, 2008.
Q. I took a Code of Ethics class at SMAR about a year
ago. I don't remember if it was a class for Maryland Code
of Ethics or REALTOR® Code of Ethics. How can I find out?
A. The Code of Ethics Classes offered at SMAR
satisfies both requirements. If you took a Code of Ethics
class from a different provider, you may want to check with the
course provider to make sure that the course you took included
the Maryland Code of Ethics requirements (including flipping and
predatory lending) as well at the REALTOR® Code of Ethics.
Q. How do I report to NAR that I attended a REALTOR®
Code of Ethics training class within the current four-year cycle
January 1, 2005 – December 31, 2008?
A. SMAR is responsible for maintaining member
records including recording attendance at Code of Ethics classes
and for frequent uploading of member records to NAR.
Q. I took a Code of Ethics class from a different provider.
Can I assume that my attendance at that class has been reported
to NAR?
A. No. Contact the provider to ask if they
reported your attendance to NAR.
Q. I attended an Ethics class that satisfied the NAR
REALTOR® Code of Ethics requirements. How do I notify SMAR?
A. If you have attended a class somewhere other than
SMAR and the outline followed the specific criteria and learning
objectives established by the National Association of REALTORS®,
you may provide a copy of your completion certificate by faxing
to Hannah Sanders 301-870-2575 or you may mail to SMAR, 8440 Old
Leonardtown Road, Hughesville, MD 20637.
NARs specific criteria and learning objectives may
be found here.
Q. I just discovered that the Ethics class I took did not satisfy
the NAR REALTOR® Code of Ethics requirements. What can I do
to complete this requirement by December 31, 2008?
A. Members can access the ethics training course on
line—free of charge at www.realtor.org.
On the left side of the screen, click on Education or you may
type this link into your browser window http://www.realtor.org/mempolweb.nsf/pages/coetraining.
The online course is completely automated; REALTORS® can
stop and start from where they leave off, as long as they
complete a course within 30 days from their start date. A
member's successful completion of the course is recorded in NRDS
(the National REALTORS® Database System) so that local
associations can track who has completed the online course.
Please
note: The course is password protected. If you have
not set up your user name and password on realtor.org, it only
takes a minute to do so.
