Joining SMAR: Do I Need to Join Two Associations?
Anyone who has been a REALTOR for more than a few years recalls the days when you had to join many local associations to do business in each. Often this was driven by the need to join multiple separate MLS's as well.
The reagionalization of the MLS and the NAR Board of Choice policy has largely eliminated the requirement that a REALTOR must join multiple local associations of REALTORS. NAR's policy states that all local associations in the country must provide services to any REALTOR at the same cost as those provided to primary members of that association. This means that you do NOT need to join SMAR if you already belong to NAR and another State and Local association of REALTORS in order to obtain:
Access to Forms Access to Education classes The right to participate in SMAR events Access to SMAR Mediation services Access to SMAR membership lists Access to the Sentrilock Lock box System Access to SMAR listings on the MLS
as long as you are willing to pay the same prices the members pay for the individual service. Note that lock box services are a separate corporation and a separate entity. It is required that you join the lock box system to participate in it. You do not, however, need to join SMAR in order to join the lock box system. The MLS works in a similar way. You do not need to join SMAR to participate in the MLS.
If you wish to:
Participate in SMAR committees Participate in SMAR leadership Join this web site and use its features Receive the SMAR Weekly Update email news Receive the SMAR Times Association Newsletter Enjoy the hands-on care of our membership staff
you should join SMAR.
Board of Choice also means you can make SMAR your local "Board" (Association) of choice. If SMAR's offices and services are more conveniently located to home or office, or our staff is more helpful and our fees easier to pay, please consider making SMAR your primary local association.
