On early Sunday morning, Jan. 4 at approximately 1:30 a.m., police from St. Mary's, Calvert, Maryland State and a Canine unit were called to handle a disturbance in the rental hall over the firehouse.
Congratulations to parents Scarlet and Bracken Turpin of California and to Amber and Jeff Dixon of Callaway for the births of their babies, making them the first babies born in Southern Maryland in 2009!
Beginning Jan. 1, 2009, North Beach and Leonardtown will be participating in the Maryland Municipal League Geocache Trail. Maryland is the first state league in the U.S. to launch such an event.
As reported earlier today on TheBAYNET.com, there were multiple fires on New Year's Eve, Dec. 31, 2008. Sadly one of those fires has ruined the start of the New Year for one Hermanville family.
A large barn near Hogeboom Lane and Rosecroft Road in Historic St. Mary's City was destroyed after a fire at 11:15 a.m. on Jan. 2. Several chickens perished in the blaze.
High winds which accompanied the end of 2008 caused numerous brush fires around Southern Maryland. In Charles, St. Mary's and Calvert there were over 20 such fires caused by downed and energized power lines, keeping SMECO as busy as fire crews.
