Government Affairs Update for February 2009

2/10/2009

 Monday's Legislative Luncheon a Hit!

Over 50 SMAR members engaged the State Delegation in a frank discussion of the day-to-day realities of practicing real estate in the current economic climate.  Your State legislators learned a lot about the difficulties REALTORS® face in their efforts to assist homeowners facing foreclosure and negotiating the perils and pitfalls of dealing with bank owned real estate on behalf of their buyers.

And they want to know more.......

If you've recently had experiences with violations of RESPA or Maryland law in a transaction involving a foreclosed property, please contact me by not later than noon on February 26, 2009.  Provide your contact information and brokerage, the date of the transaction, the address of the property, the selling bank or mortgage company involved and a complete description of the violations, i.e., not permitting the buyer to select their own settlement attorney or title company, removing State-mandated disclosures (like lead paint) from contracts, and requiring first-time homebuyers to pay State transfer taxes, etc.

I will compile these experiences into one package and personally deliver them to our State delegation at the Southern Maryland Legislative Reception the evening of February 26th.

Bill to permit Charles County to increase environmental service fees throughout the County to pay for water purchased from WSSC is DOA.

St. Mary's County Planning Commission to hold public hearing for amendments to sign ordinance on March 9, 2009.  More details forthcoming.
